Better Relationships - RBS

Aim: To offer all employees the opportunity to achieve better work-life balance

Activity: Development of RBS Choice, a flexible working initiative, to provide staff with comprehensive options on how, where and when they work

The RBS Choice initiative has evolved over a number of years and demonstrates the Group’s commitment to offer their employees comprehensive options on how, where and when they work – helping to give them a greater sense of control, well-being and a better work-life balance. RBS believe that this will enable their people to be more engaged and productive and therefore improve organisational performance and customer service.

RBS Technology, Human Resources and Property Management have collaborated to drive forward the cultural changes that underpin flexible working, to introduce pathfinder projects that deliver flexibility and choice, and to measure data from all outcomes.

RBS Choice was developed to provide flexible working options for employees recognising that their working patterns might need to flex as their work-life circumstances change over time.  RBS’ decision to actively promote flexible working options was informed by the knowledge that many RBS employees will become parents or need to care for aged or infirm relatives at some point in their career and for variable periods of time. RBS Choice is available to all employees globally; enabling them to better balance domestic and work commitments whilst allowing RBS to retain their talented staff.

Since the initiative was launched in 2011, RBS has rolled out Choice projects across several of its businesses. They have continued to engage with employees over an extended period, and have developed a suite of management and HR policies in response to employee feedback.  In addition, RBS have developed a range of analytical metrics to better measure and understand the dynamics of flexible working so that outcomes of Choice benefits the business and RBS customers, as well as individual employees.

Key impacts:

There are now 23,000 RBS employees working flexibly. A survey of those employees who are already working flexibly provides strong evidence of the benefits:

  • “I’m better able to manage my health and wellbeing” (72% agreed)

  • “My travelling to work/commuting is better” (70% agreed)

  • “I’m happier” (87% agreed).

For customers and the Group, an independent study has found that “the benefits of flexible working are pronounced and consistent across the board,” and according to RBS research amongst its own employees, 94% of respondents said that having flexible working options helps to retain talent within the Group.

“After I had my second child, I knew that juggling the demands of work with a young family was going to be a challenge.  Within 24 hours, my new flexible working pattern had been approved and I’ve been making it work for almost six months now.  As a result, I have moved house, have more family support around me and am more committed to RBS.  On a personal level, I am so much happier now.”  DT, Inclusion Team

“Flexible working has completely changed my life as well as my attitude towards RBS.  Trust is now what I have in my working relationship.  I can undoubtedly prove the case for flexible working contributing to wellbeing, engagement and diversity.”  DC, Group HR

“I was one of the first job share staff members recruited by RBS 13 years ago. Since then, RBS has fully supported my requests for part-time and latterly full-time compressed hours. This has been invaluable to me and my family and I am so grateful to have had this opportunity.”  CW, Business Manager

“Over the last couple of years my mother suffered from failing health and by changing my working pattern I was able to be there for Mum when she needed me and also be able to manage my workload effectively. This meant that I didn't feel as if I was being pulled in two different directions and it definitely contributed to my wellbeing. Sadly my Mum died last year and I’ve moved back to a more standard working pattern but I’ll always be grateful to RBS for giving me the opportunity to balance my personal life and work life in this way.”
