Winners of the 2019 Business in the Community Responsible Business Awards announced

  • ​Boots UK scoops top prize as Responsible Business of the Year
  • 12 companies won awards at the 2019 Business in the Community Responsible Business Awards
  • Four new Prince’s Responsible Business Ambassadors announced

This year’s Gala was in partnership with Lloyds Banking Group, Responsible Business of the Year 2018 and was co-hosted by Gigi Morley, television and radio broadcaster, and Oli Barratt MBE, host of Business in the Community’s podcast, the Lens. The event was the culmination of the 2019 Responsible Business in Action campaign, run by Business in the Community – The Prince’s Responsible Business Network - to celebrate the innovative ways that businesses in the UK and abroad are making a sustained difference and transforming communities.
With mental health as the theme for this year’s Gala, outgoing Responsible Business of the Year, Lloyds Banking Group, spoke on behalf of the Business in the Community Wellbeing Leadership team and called on businesses to address the challenge of growing  numbers of employees who say work contributes to their mental health issues. Yomi Sode, a spoken word artist, poet, MC and one of three writers awarded this year’s Jerwood Compton Poetry Fellowship, performed two poems about mental health live on stage.
Boots UK was announced as the 2019 Responsible Business of the Year for looking beyond their position as a health and beauty retailer by making a real impact in widening access to primary healthcare in the UK. Among many achievements, they have formed a 10-year partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, creating more than 2000 Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists and more than 800 Boots Macmillan Beauty Advisors, both of which provided more than 136,500 conversations/consultations last year. Additionally, over 25,000 Boots UK colleagues have become Dementia Friends, with at least one in every store. They provide in-store and online support to create multi-sensory memory boxes to help stimulate conversations, improve mood and break down barriers. 
Other winners included Timpson, who won the Unipart Outstanding Employment Award for its commitment to give jobs to marginalised groups and help cut re-offending rates. They offer in-prison training academies, work experience for ex-offenders and for inmates on release on temporary licence and an apprenticeship scheme. 
The small business Unipart Outstanding Employment Award was won by NEMI Teas who employ refugees to run tea stalls across London food markets festivals, events and conferences allowing them to boost their English skills, gain confidence and work on skills required to enter the UK job market.  The scheme has enabled 12 out of 18 refugees to go on to secure part-time and full-time jobs.
The Fujitsu Digital Innovation Award was won by ENGIE who have helped thousands of customers reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions as a result of their investment in digitalisation and the provision of smart sensors to customers.
Unilever was named as winner of the Barclays Developing Resilience Award for their partnership with the Humanitarian Leadership Academy where they have developed a programme to provide business continuity training to micro, small and medium-sized companies in the Philippines.  Over a thousand business owners in the Philippines have been trained to build resilience and protect the supply chain.
Alongside the awards, four new Prince’s Responsible Business Ambassadors were announced at the Gala.  They are

  • Christopher Gray, managing director, Accenture
  • John Healy, managing director and vice president, Allstate NI
  • Tim Hill, partner, Eversheds Sutherland
  • Richard Walker, managing director, Iceland Foods

The Prince’s Responsible Business Ambassadors are chosen for their leadership in transforming their own businesses and empowering other organisations to take action.  In their role, they promote the responsible business agenda in their country or region, engaging the local business community around key social issues.
